School records fall in 121-40 rout

INDIANAPOLIS- The seventh-ranked UIndy women's basketball team (4-0) delivered an impressive 121-40 win in the opening game of the UIndy Thanksgiving Classic Friday.  The Greyhounds' scoring output set a new program mark, as did their .714 field goal percentage.

Though the final deficit of 81 was staggering, it fell short of the Greyhounds' highest-ever scoring margin of 85, set in a 110-25 victory over Fisher (Mass.) in December of 2004.

The Hounds used strong defensive ball pressure to build an early cushion, forcing seven Mustang turnovers by the first media timeout alone.  By the half, UIndy would score 17 points off turnovers and 29 off fast break opportunities.

In addition, UIndy could hardly miss from the outside.  After missing their very first 3-point try, the Greyhounds sank an amazing 10 straight triples to put further pressure on Marygrove (1-6).

With about 12 minutes to go in the half and the lead at 10, Indianapolis held its guest without a field goal for four minutes while putting together a damaging 16-1 run.

The margin would hit 39 at the break, as the Hounds shot a gaudy 72.7 percent from the floor in the first twenty minutes.  UIndy's senior forwards Samantha Meissel and Katie Lyons (pictured) led the way offensively with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Indianapolis had much of the same for the Mustangs in the second half.  With 16:27 remaining, a pair of Eliza Wortman free throws upped the lead to 50.

A rare Greyhound scoring drought followed, as neither team scored for the next three minutes.  The dry spell prove to be a mere speed bump, however, as the Hounds finished the night scoring 23 of the game's final 25 points to secure the record-setting victory.

The Hounds connected on 45-of-63 field goal attempts, good for 71.4 percent.   The prolific shooting snapped the program's previous single-game high of 70.2 percent from January of 2003.

All 15 Greyhounds saw significant time and all 15 had at least three points.  Meissel needed just 13 minutes to record a game-high 20.  Three other Hounds finished in double figures, with 18 points coming from Lyons, 15 from Rose Savela and 12 from Shelby Wall.  Meissel and Lyons combined to go 15-for-18 from the field.

Kristin Turner had nine assists and three steals, while Hillary Wenning and Nickole Gonser each had six rebounds.

The Classic continues tomorrow with the Hounds hosting 23rd-ranked Tusculum in a 5 p.m. EST tip.  The game follows a Lewis/Marygrove match-up at 3 p.m.
