Johns, Walpole take titles at St. Cloud State Husky Open

Husky Open Final Brackets
Husky Open Placing Summary

ST. CLOUD, Minn.- A pair of Greyhounds took championships at the Husky Open, hosted by St. Cloud State Saturday. Alex Johns took top billing in the 125 bracket, and Nick Walpole won his second-straight tournament with a first place finish in the 157 class.

"This was a really important tournament for us because of the regional realignment," Greyhound Head Coach Jason Warthan said. We competed against Wisconsin-Parkside, St. Cloud State , Mary and Minnesota State-Mankato. We were able to see some of the guys we will be seeing at the Regional meet in February. Even though we didn't match up with too many of those schools we did wrestle like opponents which can help us at the seeding meeting."

Johns went 4-0 on the day to move to 10-0 on the season. The sophomore, who was top-seeded in the bracket, took the final bout via a medical forfeit by St. Cloud State's Zach Stewart.

The second-seeded Walpole also went 4-0 on the day, improving to 13-1 overall. He won three of his matches on the day via major decision, and took the championship bout 4-2 over St. Cloud State's jacob Horn, 4-2.

Evan Wooding also placed, third in the 285 bracket. The No. 5 seed in the bracket, Wooding lost in his first bout of the day, but rebounded to win five straight matches to take third place. He bested the bracket's No. 3 seed, Nikolas Bogojevic, 4-2 in the third-place bout.

Jake Holler took sixth in the 174 class, going 3-3 on the day. The even record at the Husky Open moves Holler's 2010-11 record to 5-6.

UIndy returns to the mat next Saturday and Sunday, hosting the 32nd annual Midwest Classic in Nicoson Hall.

"It was clear today that we are not where we want to be," Warthan said. "We have a little catching up to do with some of the teams in our regional. Next weekend will be a good test for us. We will have another opportunity to some new teams and see how we match up with some of the nation's best."
