INDIANAPOLIS- Three Greyhounds are still alive in Midwest Classic action after Day I. Four-seeded
Alex Johns headlines that group, taking a spot in the semi-finals of the 125 bracket.
"We have three guys moving on," Head Coach Jason Warthan said. "I thought the guys that are moving on wrestled well. We had a few matches that we let slip away. It is going to be another tough day for our guys tomorrow."
Johns won both of his matches on the day, pinning Mt. St. Joseph's Cory Clolinger in 0:58 in his first match and taking a 7-5 decision over five-seeded Johnny Papesh of Campbellsville.
Nick Walpole and
Jeff Weiss are also still in action. Walpole pinned his first opponent, Clark Driz of Newman, in 0:21. He lost his second bout of the day, 11-2 to eight-seeded Marc Hoff of Ashland, but rebounded with a pin of Lake Erie's Zev Greene in 1:31 in his first wrestleback bout.
Weiss took a 13-3 win over Central Missouri's Todd Brier in his first match of the day, and also took a win in his second, taking a 3-1, overtime decision over four-seed Tom Graszel of Ashland. Weiss lost to No. 5 Pat Spano of King, but then won his first wrestleback bout 7-6 over Neil Sell of Northern State.
In the team race, Newberry leads the pack with 103 points. Upper Iowa is in second with 82 points, and Ashland sits in third with 73 points. UIndy is currently in 11th place with 41 overall points.
Wrestling starts tomorrow at 10 a.m. from Nicoson Hall.
