INDIANAPOLIS- The Greyhound wrestlers finished 10th of 21 teams, placing three grapplers at the 32nd annual Midwest Classic at Nicoson Hall. Newberry took the team title, posting  169 team points. Upper Iowa took second and North Carolina-Pembroke finished third in the field.

"Three placers is not what we were hoping for this weekend," Head Coach Jason Warthan said. "Overall I thought we were pretty flat and emotionless. We lost most of the close matches that we needed a late takedown or a score to pull out the win. Good teams find ways to win and keep advancing to the next round."

Walpole lost to Newberry's Sean Byrnes 9-3 in his first match of the day, but took a 7-6 win over Winston Robbins to take the fifth place spot. The Greyhound 157 had the most falls of the tournament, pinning three of his opponents over the two-day event.

Johns started out his day with a loss, 12-3 at the hands of top-seeded Russell Weekly of North Carolina-Pembroke. Johns ended up as the sixth placer in the 125 bracket.

Weiss took the sixth place title in the 165 bracket. He lost to Newberry's Blake Ridenour 9-4 to start the day, and then lost to Patrick Spano of King in the fifth-place bout, 4-2.

UIndy returns to the mats in 2011, heading to Ashland for the Mid-Atlantic Duals Jan. 8.

"I'm looking forward to the break," Warthan said. "It will give us some time to heal and recharge our batteries.  We want our guys wrestling well second semester."
