ANGOLA, Ind.- The UIndy grapplers took a 31-9 win over Trine in their first dual meet action of the 2010-11 season. The Greyhounds took wins in eight of the ten bouts of the match to earn the win.
"We did a great job of controlling the matches tonight," UIndy Head Coach Jason Warthan said. "We talked a lot about getting meaningful takedowns or scoring at the end of periods and we certainly did that tonight. The final team score doesn't exactly reflect the intensity of the matches. We won all the close matches."
UIndy took wins in the first six bouts of the meet to jump to a 25-0 lead.
Alex Johns took the first Greyhound win of the night at 125, winning via an 8-6 decision.
Ethan Harris took a win via forfeit by Trine at 133, and
Matt Irwin followed with a 12-3 major decision victory over Trine's Forrest Romer at 141.
David Lopez continued the winning ways of UIndy, pinning Nick Odom in 0:52 at 149.
Nick Walpole won with an escape in the second tie-breaker period to take a 5-4 decision at 157.
Jeff Weiss was the next victorious Greyhound, defeating Ryan Pieper 8-4 in the 165 bout.
George Lopez and
Keith Smith closed out the UIndy wins, with both taking 3-2 decisions in their bouts.
"George and Keith's matches were huge," Warthan said. "They thought they could win from 157 - 285 and we held them to two wins there."
UIndy heads to the Husky Open at St. Cloud State this Saturday.
