Baseball drops third straight at CSU

Box score

COLUMBUS, Ga.- The 12th-ranked UIndy baseball team capped a three-game series at Columbus State with a 3-2 loss to the home Cougars at Ragsdale Field.  The win earned a series sweep for CSU, who came away with the “W” Sunday despite being out hit by the Greyhounds and also committing four errors.

In just his second time ever in the leadoff spot, and first since 2007, Aryn Ross started the game with a double and moved to third on the first Cougar error.  Adam Akin followed with a ground ball to the right side to score Ross and give the Hounds the early lead.

The Cougars (9-2) answered with single runs in the second and fourth innings, both coming on solo homers off starter Donovan Drake.   In his first start as a Greyhound, the junior transfer went four and a third and struck out four while allowing three earned runs, five hits and two walks.

UIndy tied it at two in the top of the fifth as Akin delivered his second RBI of the day with a double, but CSU immediately answered with a one-out RBI double from Alex Montes in the bottom half.  The hit chased Drake from the game while giving the Cougars the lead, ultimately for good.

The Greyhound bullpen kept the deficit at one, as Sean Elliott and Andy Betts combined for five Ks in three-and-two-thirds scoreless innings, but Drake would eventually be tagged with the loss as the UIndy offense failed to score again.

With two on and one out in the top of the ninth, the Hounds had their best chance to tie it, but a game-ending double play killed a potential UIndy rally while extending CSU's winning streak to eight.

Ross (pictured) finished with a game-high three hits.  No other Greyhound had more than one.

UIndy (2-3) will make its third consecutive weekend trip to Georgia next week when it travels to Milledgeville, Ga. for a three-game series with Georgia College & State Saturday and Sunday.
