On tap:
Thanks to its stellar 16-2 conference record, the third-ranked UIndy women's basketball team not only earned a bye in the upcoming GLVC Tournament, but also an additional home game Sunday afternoon.  St. Joseph's and Missouri-St. Louis square off at Nicoson Hall Saturday Feb. 27, with the winner advancing to face the Greyhounds the next day.

Tourney Time:
With the annual GLVC Tournament adopting a new 12-team format this year, UIndy is one of four schools to earn hosting rights for this weekend's first and quarterfinal rounds.  West Division-champion Drury (23-6, 15-3 GLVC), North Division-winner Wisconsin-Parkside (21-6, 13-5) and top second-place finisher Southern Indiana (22-7, 13-5) will all have two tourney games on campus this weekend.  The winner of each quarterfinal game will travel to the University of Illinois-Springfield for the conference semifinals and finals Mar. 6-7.  Click here to view the tourney's official home page.

Division Champs:  The Greyhounds captured their first outright division title since the league split into divisions for the 2005-06 season.  The Greyhounds finished with a three-game cushion over second-place finishers Southern Indiana and Northern Kentucky.  UIndy and NKU finished with identical 13-6 marks in conference play back in 2008, though the Norse defeated the Hounds twice during the regular season.

About Saturday's Game
:  Saturday's match-up features the West Division's three seed in Missouri-St. Louis and the North's No. 4, Saint Joseph's.  Both teams sport losing records on the season, with UMSL coming in at 11-16 and St. Joseph's at 8-19.  It marks the Tritons' first appearance in the conference tourney since 2005-06, while the Pumas haven't made the trip since 2002-03.

Hounds vs. Tritons:
The Greyhounds have faced UMSL twice before in GLVC Tournament play, with UIndy taking both decisions, winning 68-53 in the '05 quarterfinals and 70-69 in the 2000 semis.

Overall, UIndy owns a 15-8 edge in the all-time series, thanks to a 89-61 rout in St. Louis earlier this season.  The Hounds jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never looked back, as junior Samantha Meissel amassed 33 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Hounds vs. Pumas:
Though UIndy has yet to face St. Joe's in the postseason, the top-seeded Hounds own a sizeable 38-22 advantage in the all-time series.  Indianapolis took this season's lone meeting 65-51 on Jan. 28.  The Greyhounds shot a season-low 41 percent from the field but got 16 points and 11 rebounds from Meissel and 16 points and 10 boards from Jessica Canary to hold off a persistent Pumas squad and earn its 20th straight win.  It marked first time since November 2005 that two Greyhounds notched a double-double in the same game.

Last Time Out:
UIndy snapped its two-game skid with a 80-69 road  win at division-rival Northern Kentucky last Saturday.  NKU came into the night allowing less than 58 points per game, but UIndy used a program-record 38 made free throws to hang 80 on the home team, marking just the second time all year the Norse have allowed at least 80 in a game.

Head Coach LeAnn Freeland:  In her third season at the helm, UIndy women's basketball head coach LeAnn Freeland enters play this week sporting a 71-20 career record, good for a .780 winning percentage - highest in program history. Freeland has guided UIndy to back-to-back NCAA berths, including its first-ever NCAA “Sweet 16” appearance last year.  In one of the tourney's toughest regions, the Greyhounds took down a pair of top-10 teams at the 2009 Big Dance (No. 3 Hillsdale & No. 9 Quincy) before falling 69-52 to 22nd-ranked  Michigan Tech in the Midwest Region final.

Sam I Am:  Junior forward Samantha Meissel is soon to join an elite group, as she enters plays this week just 13 points shy of 1,500 for her career.  Already one of only two Hounds with two 500-point seasons to her credit, Meissel would become just the sixth Greyhound woman to join the 1,500-point club.  The all-region performer set the program's single-season record with 581 points scored last season and currently  leads the GLVC in scoring, averaging 19.6 points per game this year.  The 6-2 forward is on pace to become the first UIndy women's player to lead the league in scoring since Debbie Law (19.2 ppg) accomplished the feat in 1982-83, the league's inaugural season.

Double Down:
With 18 points and 10 rebounds at NKU, senior guard Jessica Canary notched her fourth double-double of the season and ninth in her career.  She's now tied for ninth in the UIndy annals in career double-doubles.  Canary is also the only player in the league to record both a points/rebounds and a points/assists double-double this season.

Indy 300:
Senior point guard Katie Dewey enters play this week five steals shy of becoming just the second Greyhound ever to record 300 career steals.  Dewey - who ranks first in the GLVC and 21st in the nation in steals - currently has 295 career thefts, 32 less than the school's all-time leader, Melissa Graham (1991-95).

Charitable Acts:
UIndy set a new team record at NKU last Saturday by sinking 38 free throws against the Norse.  The total also represented the highest sum in the GLVC this season, five more than the second highest total.  The Greyhounds drew 31 personal fouls in the contest and finished 38-for-44 (.864) from the charity stripe.  The Hounds' previous record for free throws made in a game was 37, coming versus Kentucky Wesleyan back on Jan. 10, 1985.

Feast for the East:
The GLVC East easily compiled the best non-division record among the league's three divisions, winning 35 of 50 contests.  All five East schools went at least .500 in inter-division play, highlighted by UIndy's and NKU's combined 19-1 mark.  Below is a breakdown of each division's combined record versus the conference's other two factions.

Division Record Pct.
East 36-14 .720
North 21-29 .420
West 18-32 .360

Court & Classroom Success:
Senior Jessica Canary, who maintains a 3.90 cumulative GPA in Elementary Education, was named to the 2009-10 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® College Division Third Team this week, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  As the first-ever UIndy women's basketball player to earn the honor, Canary is the 43rd Greyhound to garner Academic All-America accolades and 31st since 2000.  The versatile guard ranks in the league's top 16 in scoring, rebounding, assists, blocks and free throw percentage.  She is also on track to become the first player in program history to finish her career with over 1300 points, 600 rebounds & 400 assists.

Regional Rankings:
Despite Michigan Tech falling at Hillsdale last Saturday, UIndy remains in the No. 2 spot behind the Huskies in the lastest Midwest Regional rankings.  The top eight teams will make he NCAA D-II Tournament, with the top-seeded squad acting as hosts.  The 64-team field will be annouced Sunday, Mar. 7 at 9 p.m.
