MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.- In its third consecutive weekend trip inside the Georgia state line, the 28th-ranked UIndy baseball team dropped its fifth straight with two losses to No. 29 Georgia College and State at John Kurtz Field Saturday. UIndy's starters combined to go just two innings on the day, as the home Bobcats went on to wins of 16-4 and 10-7.
After starting the season 0-4, Saturday's victories pushed GCSU's winning streak to six as the Bobcats have averaged over 11 runs per game over that stretch.
GAME 1
UIndy (2-5) got a run in top of the first inning on a
Michael Bradburn double, but Georgia College (6-4) came right back with six runs in the bottom of the first. Four walks and three singles conspired against Greyhound starter
Cory Rupert, as the Bobcats chased the all-region pitcher after just two thirds of an inning.
Senior
Vince Saisi made an early appearance to relieve Rupert and after giving up an RBI single, coaxed a ground ball to finally end the frame. Georgia College sent 11 hitters to the plate to help build the five-run cushion.
With Saisi still on the hill, the Bobcats extended the lead to with two in the fourth and two more in the fifth, upping the score to 10-1.
Later, UIndy managed five straight hits in a three-run rally in the eighth, but GCSU answered with six runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the game away.
Aryn Ross had two hits, two runs and an RBI to lead the Greyhounds offensively.
GAME 2
Both teams again scored in their respective half of the first inning, but this time it was the Hounds that owned the lead after one. UIndy struck first with a four-spot in their first at bat.
Scott Mourey,
Andrew Armour and
Travis Capps all picked with RBIs in the frame, highlighted by Capps' two-run double.
The lead didn't last for long, however, as the Bobcats followed with a pair in the bottom half on a two-run jack from catcher Richard Pirkle. After the Hounds squandered a two-on, one-out situation in the second, GCSU jumped in front with three runs in the bottom of the second. The Bobcats tagged starter
Cory White with four hits and three runs to chase him after just an inning and a third. White's uncharacteristic day ended with five earned runs allowed, two walks and no strikeouts.
Georgia College & State kept the pressure on by scoring single runs in the third and fourth to go up 7-4, but UIndy looked for a big inning in the fifth.
Adam Akin and
Zach Kreegar started the frame with back-to-back walks, while Mourey's single loaded the bases with nobody out.
Indianapolis managed only one run before the rally stalled, however, as two grounders and a strikeout ended the inning while producing just a single tally.
GCSU eventually scored in six of its eight times at bat before going on to the 10-7 win.
Akin and Mourey each had two hits in the capper, while
Colby Shaw had an RBI triple and scored in the Hounds' two-run eighth.
UIndy finished its three-game series with the Bobcats tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for noon EST.
