Bobcats sweep Greyhounds

Box score

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.- The 28th-ranked UIndy baseball team extended its losing streak to six with a 8-2 defeat at Georgia College & State Sunday.  The Greyhounds were within two in the seventh, but a deflating rally by the Bobcats sent the visitors home winless in the three-game series.

Georgia College (7-4) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, giving the home team at least two first-inning runs in each game of the series.  UIndy starter Donovan Drake walked the first two Bobcats he faced, and after catcher Chase Kittinger cut down a would-be base stealer at third base, GCSU junior Richard Pirkle smacked his second homerun in as many games to stake the Bobcats to the early advantage.

Georgia College, ranked No. 29 in the D-II Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Poll, kept the Hounds' bats quiet until the seventh.  With the Bobcats up 4-0, Chris Ulrey smacked a two-out double before a Colby Shaw single put two on for Kaleb Cunningham.  The Greyhound shortstop delivered with a triple to right to halve the margin and put the Hounds within striking distance.

GCSU answered with four in the bottom of the seventh, however.  With two out and nobody on, a Greyhound throwing error sparked the rally, chasing Donovan after 6.2 IP while diminishing hopes of comeback.

UIndy (2-6) managed just a single in the final two frames to ensure the loss.  Ulrey and Shaw combined to go 4-for-8 with two runs on the day.

The Greyhounds travel to Oakland City next weekend for four in-region games versus the Mighty Oaks.  Doubleheaders are scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday.
