INDIANAPOLIS- The third-ranked University of Indianapolis women's basketball team cruised to a 94-66 win over Missouri-St. Louis in the quarterfinal round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament at Nicoson Hall Sunday. The Greyhounds shot nearly 60 percent from the field while forcing 17 turnovers in a solid all-around performance.
It took all of two minutes for UIndy to jump out to a 10-2 lead. The Greyhounds relentlessly fed the post through the early going, as junior forward
Katie Lyons scored nine of the team's first 17 points.
UIndy's inside game also opened things up on the perimeter, as
Katie Dewey,
Cayla Keegan and
Samantha Meissel all connected from downtown in the early going.
The Indianapolis lead touched 16 on four different occasions before settling at 18 at the first half buzzer. The Greyhounds scored eight of the half's final 10 points, with six coming off 3-pointers from Dewey.
The home Hounds held their guests to 41 percent from the field while forcing 12 turnovers in the first twenty minutes. Meanwhile, despite seeing multiple defensive looks from the Tritons, the Hounds shot at a .529 clip to earn a 49-31 lead at the break. The point total marked the third highest first-half output for the team this season.
Meissel led all scorers with 12 points heading into the locker room, followed closely by Lyons and Dewey with 11 apiece.
Dewey's hot shooting carried over into the second half, as she knocked down two more threes in the opening three-plus minutes, pushing the margin over 20.
The Hounds continued to have success both in and outside the paint throughout the half. UIndy finished with 10 made 3-pointers – half of which coming from Dewey alone – while also recording 42 points inside the lane.
UIndy led by a game-high 31 before the Tritons hit a three on the game's final shot. The Hounds shot an efficient 18-for-28 (.643) in the second half, including 5-for-8 (.625) from behind the arc.
Meissel hit 9-of-12 field goal attempts and finished with game highs in both points (22) and rebounds (6). Dewey set a personal best with five made threes while also amassing five assists and three steals. Lyons (pictured) scored 16 points,
Hillary Wenning scored 10, and
Jessica Canary dished out 10 assists.
The convincing win advances the Greyhounds to the conference semifinals next weekend, held at the University of Illinois-Springfield. As the East Division's top seed, UIndy will face North-Division-champ Wisconsin-Parkide (22-6) on the neutral court Saturday, Mar. 6 at 1 p.m. EST.
