Greyhounds cruise to 97-50 win

Box score

INDIANAPOLIS-  The University of Indianapolis women's basketball team made it 22 straight after handing Rockhurst a 97-50 defeat Thursday at Nicoson Hall.  The second-ranked Greyhounds torched the visiting Hawks with a season-high 13 made 3-pointers, part of a 56-percent-shooting effort overall.  Jessica Canary led all players with 22 points.

Fresh off being named Academic All-District First Team earlier today, Canary matched a season high with her lofty point total.  The Coatesville, Ind. native sank 7-of-10 from the floor, including 5-of-8 from behind the 3-point arc.

After Rockhurst (6-15, 2-11 GLVC) scored on the night's first possession, the game got out of hand quickly thanks to an efficient UIndy offense.  Samantha Meissel found a cutting Canary in the early going to make it 7-2 Hounds, before Cayla Keegan fed Katie Lyons in the post for an eventual 3-point play, upping the lead to eight just three minutes in.

The UIndy run didn't stop there, as the home team racked up 26 of the first 32 points to force the second Rockhurst timeout at the 10:17 mark. The stretch included a near seven-minute field goal drought from the visiting Hawks.

The deficit reached a first-half-high 33 points after Meissel's third 3-pointer of the evening made it 44-11.  Moments later, the Hounds compiled a 48-19 lead at the break, as the team combined to sink 18-of-30 (.600) field goal attempts while forcing 11 turnovers and amassing 16 assists.  Three Hounds reached double-digits in the first half alone, led by Canary's 13 points.

Though Rockhurst managed more production in the second half, it could do little to cut into the sizeable margin.  UIndy continued to hit a majority of its shots while also committed just three turnovers after intermission.

Katie Dewey upped the lead to 40 with 15:43 to go with her lone three of the evening.  The senior point guard flirted with a triple-double by totaling seven points, a career-high-tying 11 assists, and seven rebounds.

The Greyhounds' lead stayed in the 40s for much of the balance of the game before hitting a high mark of 51 in the final two minutes.

Canary and Meissel combined to shot 10-for-16 from behind the arc, as each set season highs with five triples apiece.  Meissel finished with 18 points and six rebounds, Lyons had 12 points, and Keegan recorded 10 points, five assists and three steals.

The Greyhounds (22-0, 13-0) face a tough test Saturday afternoon when West-Division-leading Drury comes calling.  Tip time from Nicoson Hall is scheduled for 1 p.m. with the men's game to follow.

Note: UIndy's 22 straight win extended the program record for most consecutive wins.
