FINAL BRACKETS
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The University of Indianapolis hosted nearly 100 wrestlers on Sunday (Feb. 7) as 97 grapplers competed for the individual titles at the Greyhound Open at Nicoson Hall.
Justin Brooks made his way through the bracket in the 125-pound bracket, claiming the individual championship after besting Johnny Papesh in the title bout.
In the 133-pound class, Tommy Pretty emerged victorious, pinning
Casey Kenney in the championship match in under a minute, earning the fall at the 58-second mark.
Matt Irwin picked up a pair of pins in his first two matches on his way to the championship at 141. Irwin earned a 10-3 decision over runner-up Matt Manuel in the title match.
Tommy Churchard cruised through the 149-pound bracket on his way to claiming the individual title, earning pins in his first two matches, and winning his last two bouts via major decisions. Top-seeded Jeff Steele finished second after dropping a 14-4 decision to Churchard in the championship bout.
Kendrick Sanders was the winner in the 157-pound weight class, earning two wins by technical fall and defeating Dustin Center 10-5 in the first place match.
The eight-member 165-pound bracket was claimed by Corey Bleaken who won the title by defeating
Nick Walpole on riding time after the bout was deadlocked at 2-2.
Ryan LeBlanc was the winner in the 174-pound bracket after earning a 7-3 decision in his opening match and then defeating Josh Ashbrook by a 5-2 margin in the championship bout.
In the 184-pound class, Spencer Adams made his way through the 11-man field, topping Allen Scruggs in the first-place match by a 5-0 decision.
Fredrick Byars picked up a pin in his opening match before claiming the 197-pound bracket with a narrow 5-3 decision over Scott Wern in the title bout.
Justin Kuhn emerged as the top heavyweight at the event, earning a pin in his opening bout before picking up a pair of major decisions on his way to the 285-pound championship. Kuhn topped Robert Brubeck in the title match by a 16-8 decision.
The Greyhound wrestling team will be back in action on February 14 when they host Campbellsville University, the University of Findlay, and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville at the Greyhound Duals. Matches are slated to begin at 10:00 AM.
