INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy baseball team made it five in a row Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Kentucky Wesleyan at Greyhound Park. The Hounds endured a seven-run ninth by the visiting Panthers before earning a 12-11 win in game one, before capping the day with a 9-0 shutout behind a complete-game effort from pitcher
Donovan Drake.
GAME 1
UIndy built a seemingly-comfortable eight-run cushion through eight innings, but the Panthers made it interesting by orchestrating the day's biggest rally in the final frame. Senior
David Early came on with two on, two out and the score at 12-8, and after surrendering a three-run homer, the veteran reliever caught the next batter looking at strike three to give the Hounds the win and earn his fourth save of the season.
Earlier, the Hounds got things going in the third inning with a two-run single from
Adam Akin. The scoring chances were set up by a well-placed sac bunt from
Kaleb Cunningham to move the runners up to second and third.
Two innings later, Indianapolis surged ahead further with a five spot, highlighted by a towering grand slam from clean-up man
Zach Kreegar. The offense provided another run-tripper in the seventh when senior
Danny Collier cleared the right field fence for a one-out solo shot.
After Early recorded the final out, starter
Cory Rupert earned his third win of the season. The junior hurler went six and two thirds while giving up eight hits and striking out four. All four runs he allowed were unearned.
GAME 2
UIndy starter
Donovan Drake had a no-no working through four innings before the Panthers finally earned their first base hit with a lead-off single in the fifth. The Danville Area Community College transfer faced just 24 batters in the seven-inning contest, as no Panther base runner advanced past second. Drake allowed just three hits while striking out eight and walking one.
The Greyhounds were up 3-0 before breaking it open in the fifth. After Collier earned an RBI double, junior
Colby Shaw blasted a 2-2 offering completely over National Avenue for his first homer in a Greyhound uniform, making it 6-0.
After a walk and a hit by pitch, the fireworks continued as
Scott Mourey sent one over the 405 mark in deep center – just left of the new batter's eye – to cap the game's scoring.
UIndy (12-7, 3-1 GLVC) completes the four-game series with KWC with another twin bill Saturday. With the threat of showers later in the day, first pitch has been moved up an hour to 11 a.m.
