UIndy 8, Maryville 2
ST. LOUIS, Mo.- In the midst of its longest winning streak in 11 years, the UIndy baseball team made it nine in a row and 14 of the last 15 with wins of 18-6 and 8-2 at GLVC-newcomer Maryville Tuesday. The consecutive win streak marks the longest by the Greyhound baseball squad since it won 11 straight in 1999.
GAME 1
After a rocky first inning, UIndy starter
Cory Rupert had little trouble with the Maryville hitters. The junior hurler surrendered a one-out, two-run homer to junior Eric Gruenewald in the bottom of the first, but followed with back-to-back strikeouts to retire the side.
Rupert cruised from that point, facing the minimum for the remainder of his six innings. Though the Saints managed a single and a walk over that span, the Southport High School grad picked both runners off at first base to kill any chance of a Maryville rally on his watch. Rupert racked up seven Ks and eight ground-ball outs to up his record to 4-2 on the year.
The UIndy offense, meanwhile, pounded Maryville pitching to the tune of 18 runs. Eight Greyhounds notched multi-hit games, as the team collectively hit 12-for-17 with runners in scoring position.
Senior catcher
Chase Kittinger helped fuel a seven-run seventh inning with a three-run dinger, making him the 10th Greyhound with at least one homerun this season. Both Kittinger (pictured) and shortstop
Kaleb Cunningham had three hits, three runs and three RBIs apiece.
GAME 2
After taking a 1-0 in the second inning, the Hounds broke it open with six runs in the fourth.
Adam Akin started the rally with a leadoff walk, followed later by a two-run double from
Travis Capps and RBI singles from
Adam Rusche and
Colby Shaw.
Donovan Drake picked up his second straight GLVC win with a five-K, zero-walk performance in the capper. Drake, who notched a complete-game shutout versus KWC Friday, went five innings while allowing one earned run to lower his ERA to 2.97 on the year.
UIndy (16-7, 7-1) steps away from conference play with a single game versus Cedarville Wednesday. First pitch from Greyhound Park is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Note: Cunningham extended his hitting streak 10 games, while Danny Collier had his 10-game hitting streak snapped in game two.
