Canary, Meissel garner All-America Honorable Mention

ATLANTA- UIndy student-athletes Jessica Canary and Samantha Meissel received All-America Honorable Mention from the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Monday night.  Canary and Meissel were two of just 30 players to receive the honor.  The WBCA, in cooperation with State Farm, also announced the 10-player NCAA Division II State Farm Coaches' All-America Team, headlined by WBCA D-II Player of the Year Johannah Leedham of Franklin Pierce University.

Canary and Meissel led the Greyhounds to the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division title and a third consecutive NCAA berth in 2009-10.  The Hounds compiled a stellar 26-4 record this season and were ranked as high as No. 2 in the USA TODAY ESPN D-II Coaches' Poll.

Canary, who will graduate in May, finished her basketball career as the only player in program history to amass more than 1400 points, 600 rebounds and 400 assists.  The Coatesville, Ind. native helped the Greyhounds to an 88-32 (.727) mark in her time on campus, one win shy of the program record for most victories in a four-year span.

With a year of eligibility remaining, Meissel finished her junior season within striking distance of the program's all-time scoring record.  The 2010 GLVC Player of the Year currently sits fifth in the all-time UIndy scoring annals, less than 400 point shy of the school record.

The 10-member WBCA All-America Team was chosen by a vote of a selection committee comprised of one representative from each of the eight geographical regions and a chairperson.  For the complete All-America release, click here.

The WBCA, founded in 1981, promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game as a sport for women and girls. For additional information about the WBCA, please visit  wbca.org.
