INDIANAPOLIS- With the Greyhounds taking game one from visiting St. Joseph's 13-5 Saturday, University of Indianapolis head coach
Gary Vaught reached the 700-win mark in his 21-year coaching career. An eight-run first inning helped the cause, but the Pumas later salvaged a split, using a seven-run first in game two on the way to a 12-3 win.
GAME 1
The Greyhounds (22-12, 11-5 GLVC) started things off with eight big runs in the first inning. UIndy had just four hits in the frame – all singles – but three walks, a hit batsman and an error helped lift the Hounds to the big early lead.
The Pumas crept back in it with five runs, including four in the top of the sixth, but UIndy got all five back in the bottom half of the sixth. Back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out, setting up a
Chase Kittinger sacrifice fly that was later followed by an RBI single from
Travis Capps, a bases-loaded walk from
Danny Collier and a two-run single from
Chris Ulrey.
Junior
Cory Rupert got the starting nod in the all-important first game, going five and two-thirds innings to up his record to 5-2 on the year. He allowed five runs – four earned – while striking out four and walking one. Junior
Andy Betts relieved Rupert in the sixth and went the rest of the way to earn his second save.
Junior
Kaleb Cunningham had three hits and three runs.
GAME 2
Roles reversed in the second game, as the Pumas (16-13, 9-7) did the first-inning damage in the capper. UIndy starter
Donovan Drake, who had given up just one run in 19 innings of GLVC play heading into today, was touched up for seven runs in the opening frame.
When the junior hurler finally settled down, he fanned the final batter in the inning and went on to retire eight straight batters, including striking out the side in the second.
UIndy scored two in the fourth and one in the fifth only to see the Pumas record the exact same tallies in the top of the fifth and sixth innings, respectively.
The Greyhounds finished the game with just two hits: a
Chris Ulrey solo homerun in the fourth and a
Matt Maringer single in the seventh.
SJC starter Steve Styck allowed just one hit while striking out eight in his six innings of work, upping his record to 3-1 on the season, while Drake's record dropped to 4-3 after being tagged with the loss.
UIndy concludes its series with the Pumas with a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch from Greyhound Park is set for noon EDT.
