INDIANAPOLIS- The Greyhound baseball team salvaged a series split with arch-rival Saint Joseph's, dropping a 5-2 decision in game one and dominating the Pumas in a 13-5 thrashing in the nightcap.
Chase Kittinger collected four hits in the win Sunday.
Cory White was engaged in a pitchers' dual with St. Joes' Chris Chojnowski in the opener as the righties combined for 17 strikeouts. White uncorked a pair of wild pitches in the first to plate the first Puma run and single runs in the third and fourth staked SJC to a 3-0 lead through four innings. UIndy (22-12, 11-5) got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth when
Kaleb Cunningham doubled down the left field line to close the gap to one.
SJC (16-13, 10-8) regrabbed the momentum in the top of the next inning, scoring two to regain a 5-2 advantage. After a leadoff walk by
Chris Saroff in the sixth, the Puma staff retired the next six batters in a row to grab the win.
White struck-out eight but walked five in his five innings of work to fall to 3-3 on the season.
Game two was a different story as the Hounds raced out to a 4-0 lead after an inning. The big blow was a three-run bomb by
Danny Collier, part of his five RBI in game two. St. Joe's picked-up two in the third, but UIndy ran away with the victory, plating single runs in each of the next three innings and two more in the sixth for a 9-3 lead. The offense was not done as four more came around in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach.
Kittinger went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs, part of six different Greyhounds to have multiple hits in the capper.
Adam Akin and
Aryn Ross each had three hits, helping the top five spots in the order go 14-for-22 with 11 runs scored in the game two win.
Travis Capps got the start, but couldn't get through the fifth inning, allowing a baserunner to open the frame. His line read: four innings, two hits, two runs and five Ks with one walk. Saroff came on in relief, throwing three innings to earn the win, his first of the season. The red-shirt sophomore threw 3.0 innings with four hits, two runs and two Ks.
The Greyhounds travel to Lewis next weekend, playing four games with the Flyers in GLVC action. Both doubleheaders are slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. Eastern time.
