INDIANAPOLIS- The University of Indianapolis baseball team handed visiting Kentucky State losses of 15-4 and 17-1 Thursday at Greyhound Park, but the high point came before a single pitch was thrown, as UIndy Head Coach
Gary Vaught made a personal donation of $1,000 to Riley Hospital for Children. After the presentation, senior
Travis Capps and sophomore
Matt Maringer combined to go 10-for-12 with seven runs scored on the day.
Coach Vaught made a promise earlier this season to donate $500 to Riley Hospital for every homerun that hit a large target positioned just past the leftfield fence of Greyhound Park. Of the many homers the Hounds hit this season, some came close but none hit the mark. However, before the games Thursday, Vaught proudly presented a check to Riley Children's Foundation Development Coordinator Robyn Wood for the amount of $1,000.
GAME 1
The Greyhounds (26-15) scored in all six of their turns at the plate. After catcher
Chase Kittinger got the ball rolling with a two-run homer in the first, UIndy hung scores of two, three, two and one before a six-run fifth all but put the game away. The Hounds batted around in the productive fifth inning, as junoir
Aryn Ross found the gap for a two-run double, four batters after
Kaleb Cunningham smoked a two-run single.
Starter
Danny Collier went five innings and held to Thorobreds (2-33) to one run to earn his first win of his career. Ross, Maringer and Capps each had three hits.
GAME 2
UIndy continued to dominate in the second game, starting with a 10-run second inning. The team sent 13 batters to the plate in the frame, as Capps had two hits and two runs in the second alone. Capps was driven in the first time by
Adam Rusche, who garnered three RBI on a bases-loaded triple.
The biggest noise in the capper came off the bat of
Ryan Bockelman, who drove a 1-0 offering over the leftfield fence for a three-run shot, good for his first collegite homerun.
KSU's lone run was an unearned tally in the fourth. It marked the only run surrendered by starter
Clint Seefeldt, who gave up just three hits in fve innings of work to move to 2-1 on the year. Reliever
Ryan Pahl pitched scoreless ball the final two frames.
UIndy wraps up its GLVC slate with a four-game series at home versus Wisconsin-Parkside (12-31, 6-18 GLVC). Doubleheaders are scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m. and Saturday at noon, though rainy weather could alter the game times. Check back
here for weather updates.
Note: UIndy is ranked sixth in the latest NCAA D-II Midwest Regional Poll.
