INDIANAPOLIS - University of Indianapolis junior pitcher
Donovan Drake was selected to the NCBWA Midwest Region First Team on Thursday after an outstanding 2010 campaign that was capped by a complete-game victory over Ashland in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
The Danville, Ind. native finished his first season as a Greyhound with a 7-4 record, including a 3.39 ERA in 16 appearances. Drake led the UIndy staff in strikeouts (83), complete games (6), and shutouts (2), and limited opposing hitters to a .227 average.
In his final start of the season, Drake helped the Hounds to their lone NCAA Tournament win over Ashland by limiting the Eagles to five hits and allowed a single earned run, while striking out eight and issuing only two walks.
He returned the next day to toss a scoreless inning and a third in UIndy's extra-inning loss to Northern Kentucky that ended the season for the Greyhounds.
Drake was one of four starting pitchers selected to the 15-member first team squad and was joined by fellow Danville native Trevor Leach of the University of Southern Indiana.
The Greyhounds finished their season with a 35-22 record, going 19-9 in conference play, and made their second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
