SAUGET, Ill.- The Greyhound bats delivered three homeruns while starting pitcher
Cory Rupert tossed eight-and-two-thirds solid innings to lift UIndy to a 9-5 win versus Lewis at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Thursday night. The win ensures another tournament game for the Hounds, as the team is now 1-1 at the double-elimination tournament.
After the Flyers got on the board first with a single run in the bottom of the second, UIndy (33-19) came back with a two-run homerun from
Aryn Ross in the top of the third. His first round tripper in 27 games, Ross sent a 1-2 offering the opposite way over the “342” sign in right center.
More fireworks followed in the fifth, as UIndy got a pair of homers from
Scott Mourey and
Matt Maringer to go up 7-3. Maringer's blast not only plated three runs for the Hounds but also marked the first career homerun for the sophomore left fielder.
Giving the bullpen some needed rest, UIndy starter
Cory Rupert got 26 of the 27 needed outs. The junior hurler had to pitch around three Greyhound errors but used solid command of his plus breaking ball to help rack up a career-high 11 strikeouts and garner his seventh win of the season.
With the tying run on deck,
Chris Saroff came on to get the final out and earn the save.
UIndy awaits the loser of the Rockhurst/Southern Indiana match-up. The two division rivals face off Friday at 1 p.m., with the loser playing the Hounds immediately following.
