SAUGET, Ill.- The UIndy baseball team stayed alive at the Great Lakes Valley Tournament with a 19-10 victory over Rockhurst Friday at GCS Ballpark. Sophomore
Scott Mourey had a monster game with four extra-base hits, including three homeruns, to go with six RBI.
Mourey's performance was the first three-homer game in recent history*. The 6-5 designated hitter did not record an out on the day, reaching base safely seven times and scoring five runs.
Hungry for revenge from yesterday's 13-10 loss to Rockhurst, the Greyhounds (34-19) jumped all over the Hawks in the first. Batting from the right side, switch-hitter
Kaleb Cunningham hammered a 3-2 offering over the leftfield wall, setting the tone for what would be a seven-run inning for the Hounds.
Six more hits followed, including two-run doubles from both
Chris Saroff and
Adam Rusche. The Hounds tacked on one unearned tally for its final run of the frame, giving UIndy starter
Travis Capps a seven-run lead before throwing a single pitch.
The Hounds continued to rake as Mourey smacked his first homer of the day -- a solo shot in the second. An inning later, Cunningham hit an RBI triple before being driven in on Mourey's second dinger.
Already with four hits to his credit, Mourey capped his day with another two-run shot in the ninth. He drove in
Aryn Ross with the hit, who reached on a triple.
Not lost in the offensive outburst was Capps' performance on the mound. Capps held the potent Rockhurst bats mostly quiet for six of seven innings of work. The Hawks didn't manage a crooked number until the seventh, when back-to-back homeruns from Ryan Porter and Mike Walczuk made it 17-7 Hounds.
Capps eventually earned the win with a line of seven innings pitched, nine hits, nine strikeouts and three walks. He is now 3-0 on the year.
The loss all but ended the season for Rockhurst (30-25), as the Hawks will most likely not crack the NCAA field. UIndy moves on to play the top-overall-seed Southern Indiana Saturday at 1 p.m. EDT.
