UIndy 3, Nova Southeastern 1
INDIANAPOLIS- The fourth-ranked UIndy volleyball team started its 2010 campaign on the right foot with a pair of victories Friday, downing Wayne State in straight sets (25-15, 25-12, 26-24) and Nova Southeastern in four (25-12, 25-17, 23-25, 25-14). The matches were two of six played at the Ruth Lilly Center on the day, as the Hounds hosted the inaugural UIndy Volleyball Invitational -- a six-team event that concludes Saturday.
MATCH ONE
UIndy out-hit the Wayne State a whopping .522 to -.037 in the opening set and maintained a hefty advantage through the second, as the visitors failed to score more than 15 in either frame.
The third set saw WSU take its first lead of the contest, going up by as much as five at 10-5. The Hounds fought back with an 11-6 run to knot it at 16 apiece. Three more ties followed before UIndy put the Warriors away in a 26-24 final, punctuated by a service ace from freshman
Kenzie Bruggeman.
Senior setter
Cheneta Morrison, one of three Hounds with a team-high nine digs, finished with 31 assists while hitting .545 with seven kills. Six Greyhounds had between five and nine kills.
MATCH TWO
The nightcap started out much the same of the opener, as UIndy dominated each of the first two sets. The third set again proved to the toughest, but this time, the Hounds couldn't secure the sweep.
Despite being down 10-5 in the third, Nova Southeastern charged back to take leads of 18-16 and later 24-20. The Hounds scored three straight to force a timeout, but the Sharks responded with a set-winning kill from Rachel Woodson to stay alive.
The loss was a mere hiccup for Indianapolis, as the Greyhounds surged to a nine-point win in the deciding fourth set. Up just 10-8, Bruggeman killed the Hounds' 11th point and on her ensuing serve, led the home team to nine more tallies, upping the lead to 20-9. The rookie outside hitter garnered two aces during the rally, preceded immediately by three consecutive kills by sophomore
Kristina Kerrigan.
UIndy scored four of the final five points, including the first two collegiate kills from freshman La'Voya Williams and back-to-back block assists from
Kristina Hefferan and
Amber Lucas.
Senior
Lyndsay Callahan had a match-high 19 digs in her first-ever action at libero, while Morrison notched the second triple-double of her career with 35 assists, 13 kills and 12 digs.
Six more matches are scheduled for Saturday, starting with West Virginia State versus Wayne State at 9 AM. UIndy hosts Tusculum at 11 AM and later faces 25th-ranked Truman at 6 PM, the only match of the weekend featuring two ranked squads.
