BIG RAPIDS, Mich.- The 10th-ranked UIndy women's golf team opened its 2010-2011 season with a fourth-place showing at the Tom Kirinovic Classic, hosted by Ferris State University Sunday and Monday. Three Greyhounds finished in the top ten, led by sophomore
Lauren Vogt, who tied for third at five-over par.
Vogt used a career-best 73 Sunday to share the lead after 18 holes. The Auburn, Ind. native carded a 76 in Monday's final round to finish in a four-way tie for third at +5.
Junior
Darin Pinnick, who competed as an individual, produced back-to-back 75s take seventh place. Vogt's classmate,
Megan Kiley, also set a career low with a 73 Monday to move into a tie for eighth.
Making their collegiate debuts were freshmen
Amy Thompson,
Brianna Scheidler and
Jenny Konop. All three easily finished in the top half of the 82-woman field, as Thompson (80-77) shared 16th place, Scheidler (77-81) tied for 18th, and Konop (79-81) tied for 24th.
Ashland captured the team title with a 603 (298-305), 11 strokes ahead of UIndy (307-307). Grand Valley State's Sarah Hoffman (73-72) and Dianne Luke (77-68) of California-PA each finished one-over par, with Hoffman taking medalist honors in a playoff. The 14-team event was held at the par-72, 5851-yard Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.
UIndy's next action comes at the Screaming Eagle Classic in Evansville, Ind., Sep. 19-20.
