INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy women's basketball team (10-6, 5-3 GLVC) earned a key divisional win Monday evening, downing visiting Bellarmine 73-56 at Nicoson Hall. Freshman
Shelby Wall lit up the scoreboard with seven 3-pointers and 23 points.
Wall's total of seven triples was one short of the program record for most 3-pointers in a game, part of 15 from the Hounds as a team. Both numbers marked the Hounds' highest since a Dec. 4, 2004 win at Oakland City.
The Knights (9-8, 4-5) packed the lane by starting the evening in a 2-3 zone. UIndy made them pay with four of 3-pointers in the first four-and-a-half minutes alone, including three from Wall.
Meanwhile, Bellarmine was held without a field goal over that same span, allowing UIndy to lead by as many as eight points through the early going.
Later in the half, the Greyhounds advantage topped out at 14 when a three from freshman
Megan Birchmeier made it 35-21.
The Hounds combined their prolific 3-point shooting with strong defensive pressure to take a 40-27 lead into the locker room. UIndy went 10-for-19 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes, while also forcing 15 Bellarmine turnovers.
Wall led all players with 12 points at the break, all coming from downtown.
Despite the Hounds' first-half efficiency from long range, the Knights came out of the break and continued to give the home team a 2-3 look.
Though the Hounds cooled a bit from the outside, the Knights were unable to cut into the UIndy lead. The deficit remained in double digits for all but a minute of the second half.
The margin topped out at 19 after
Eliza Wortman's three-point play with two minutes left.
The win earned the Greyhounds a game-and-a-half cushion over the Knights in the GLVC East Division standings. UIndy is now tied with Saturday's opponent Southern Indiana for second place in the division.
Joining Wall in double figures were
Cayla Keegan and Birchmeier. Keegan amassed 13 points and six rebounds, while Birchmeieer set a personal best with 11 points while dishing out two assists.
Before facing USI, the Greyhounds travel to fellow-GLVC-East member Kentucky Wesleyan Thursday, Jan. 21. Tip time from the Owensboro Sportscenter is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. EST.
