INDIANAPOLIS- After trailing most of the game, the UIndy women's basketball team (11-9, 6-6 GLVC) fought to within one point of Saint Joseph's late in Saturday night's second half, but the visiting Pumas managed a game-changing 14-2 run to pull away from the host Greyhounds, 84-72.
The Pumas (8-12, 5-7) started the game 3-for-4 from the 3-point line to help build a seven-point lead following the first media timeout. The Greyhounds struggled to get defensive stops, as the visitors led all but one minute of the opening half.
Indianapolis trailed 40-31 at the halftime, despite shooting 50 percent from the field. Saint Joseph's matched the Hounds' shooting percentage while connecting on 5-of-9 shots from downtown.
Risking more damage from the 3-point arc, the Greyhounds switched to a 2-3 zone out of the break. The move was an attempt to limit the Pumas' dribble penetration, especially that of junior slasher Brittany Cruse.
The stops started to come, giving the Hounds renewed energy and fueling the team's up-tempo mindset.
Back-to-back transition buckets from
Katy McIntosh and
Eliza Wortman cut the deficit to three at the 13:55 mark, but consecutive triples from the SJC junior Jan Szala upped the margin back to nine.
UIndy immediately reclaimed the momentum on a three from McIntosh, and midway through the second half, an offensive rebound from Diana Jovanovic and ensuing lay-up from
Megan Birchmeier pulled the Greyhounds to within one.
The Pumas answered with another run, however, as SJC orchestrated a 14-2 rally over the next three-and-a-half minutes to earn its biggest lead of the game.
Facing a 13-point deficit with just 6:30 left, the Hounds clawed their way back to within five but could not overcome the Pumas' late surge.
The loss snapped a seven-game win streak versus Saint Joseph's. SJC sank 17-of-19 free throws while committing just eight turnovers.
McIntosh finished with a game-high 18 points to go with five rebounds,
Kristin Turner (pictured) amassed 16 points and four assists, while
Katie Lyons had 12 points and two blocks.
UIndy hits the road next week to face the two western-most GLVC schools in Drury and Rockhurst. Tip time from Drury Thursday is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. EST.
