WHEATON, Ill.- The Greyhound wrestlers finished fourth out of a field of 32 squads at the Pete Willson Wheaton College Wrestling Invitational. UIndy's
Nick Walpole earned the tournament's most outstanding wrestler honor, taking the 149-pound title at the event.
"After a up and down day one we did a great job on day two," Greyhound coach Jason Warthan said. "We finished fourth in a pretty tough field. Every weight class had several ranked kids in either DIII, DII or NAIA. I wish we had a few more guys wrestling on day two but we had a couple bad draws and we also lost a couple of winable matches. We had five kids seeded and those five all placed in the top six. Unfortunately, the other five weren't able to find a way to place."
Alex Johns defended his 2010 Pete Willson 125 title with a repeat championship in 2011. No. 1 seeded Johns went 4-0 en route to the title, recording two falls. He bested second-seeded Rikki Reynolds of Mt. Union 3-2 in the championship bout.
"It was good to see [Johns] out there again," Warthan said. "He has had an injury since Midwest."
Walpole took the second UIndy championship of the day, winning the 149-pound bracket. Second-seeded Walpole went 4-0 on the day, upseting top-seeded Issac Dukes of Case Western Reserve in the championship, 7-4.
Matt Irwin earned a second-place finish in the 141 class. The second-seeded Irwin went 4-1 on the tournament, posting a 0:22 fall on the way. Irwin lost in the championship bout to top-seeded Bebeto Yewah of UW-LaCrosse.
"Irwin is coming off of an injury and is looking better and better," Walpole said.
In the 133-pound bracket,
Ethan Harris posted a third-place finish. No. 5-seeded Harris went 4-2 over the tournament, falling in the third place bout to six-seeded Jake Fredricksen of Wisconsin-Whitewater 4-1.
"Ethan wrestled tough for the second week in a row," Warthan said. "He has been finding different ways to win matches and it is fun to watch. "
Taylor Scott was the last Greyhound to place at the tournament, finishing sixth in the 197 bracket. Scott, the No. 5 seed, went 4-3 in the bracket. He fell to No. 4 seed Curtis Hines of UW-Parkside, 8-0, in the fifth place bout.
"Taylor is improving each week," Warthan said. "He is a little banged up right now but was able to gut out a few wins for us."
Lindenwood University took the 2011 Pete Willson Invitational title with 131.0 team points. UW-LaCrosse followed with 109.5 and UW-Parkside took third with 102.5 points. UIndy amassed 100.5 team points to take fourth.
The Greyhounds return to action Tuesday, hosting McKendree in a dual meet in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center. UIndy's grapplers will honor their three seniors,
Matt Irwin,
Keith Smith and
Nick Walpole prior to the start of wrestling. The dual is set to begin at 7 p.m.
