INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy women's basketball team (7-5,2-2 GLVC) notched an 80-61 win versus Missouri-St. Louis at Nicoson Hall Thursday evening. Senior
Samantha Meissel put up a game-high 25 points to move into second on the Greyhounds' all-time scoring list.
The milestones keep coming for Meissel. After just securing her 500th career rebound Tuesday, the Terre Haute, Ind., native continued her climb up UIndy's career scoring annals, passing former standout Erin Moran (2001-05) for second place. Meissel is on target to track down all-time leader Liz Ramsey (1997-01) later this month.
The Tritons (6-7, 1-4) tried a variety of zone looks throughout the night, but the visitors had trouble containing the Greyhound attack. UIndy was able to work the ball inside and out, find the weak spots in the zone and get open looks.
UMSL even sprinkled in a zone press after the first media timeout, but the Hounds were able to solve it as well.
The Greyhounds used an 11-0 run to build an early 19-7 cushion. UMSL managed to cut the deficit to three at the 9:11 mark, but another UIndy spurt quickly pushed the lead back to double digits.
The latter rally included an offensive rebound and put-back from Meissel, as well as 3-pointers from
Shelby Wall and
Heather Gonser.
The UIndy defense held the Tritons to zero field goals and just eight points over the final 10 minutes of the half. The result was a 35-22 advantage at the break, with 15 points coming from Meissel. No other player on either team had more than eight.
Four minutes into the second half, the Hounds' lead touched 18 after Wall hit her third triple of the night. Wall finished with nine points in her first action since returning from injury.
UMSL trimmed it to 10 points with 14 minutes left but would not threaten again, as UIndy led by double digits the entire second half.
Three other Hounds joined Meissel in double figures, as
Katie Lyons went for 14 points,
Katy McIntosh had 12 and Gonser added 11.
Cayla Keegan and Gonser were each credited with four steals, while
Nickole Gonser amassed six points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.
As a team, the Hounds sank 20-of-21 free throws while forcing 19 turnovers by UMSL.
Indianapolis continues its home stand by hosting Maryville Saturday afternoon. Tip time from Nicoson Hall is scheduled for 1 p.m. EST.
Note: Meissel's career point total now stands at 1755, 132 behind Ramsey.
