INDIANAPOLIS- After leading by as many as 14 points in the second half, the UIndy women's basketball team (8-5, 3-2 GLVC) escaped Nicoson Hall with a 75-73 win versus the visiting Maryville Saints Saturday afternoon.
After a see-saw start, the Saints (5-8, 0-5) trailed for 27 consecutive minutes before knotting it at 70 apiece with 2:27 left. The Greyhounds went up by four with a minute to go, but Maryville got it back to two with a chance to tie or win.
With the scoreboard showing 75-73 Hounds, the Saints called a timeout with 7.1 seconds on the clock. Out of the stoppage, they tried to feed the post, but senior
Katie Lyons got a hand on the pass, allowing
Nickole Gonser to earn a tie up. The arrow pointed the Hounds' way and the home team ran out the final 0.4 ticks to squeak out the win.
Just as it ended, the game began as quite a dog fight, as the first 11 minutes featured nine lead changes. UIndy managed to lead to remainder of the half, though the Saints stayed within striking distance.
The Hounds mustered some momentum heading into the half, scoring the period's final seven points. The run was capped by five straight made free throws from UIndy, including three from
Shelby Wall, who was fouled shooting a 3-pointer with just 1.7 ticks on the clock.
Kristin Turner (pictured) put in 11 quality minutes in the first half, recording 10 points and two assists.
As the second half began, the momentum stayed with Indianapolis. The Greyhounds held Maryville without a field goal for nearly three minutes on the way to their first double-digit lead of the game.
The UIndy advantage reached a game-high 14 when Lyons earned an offensive rebound and put back at the 14:53 mark. The Saints kept battling, however, quickly cutting the deficit to six.
A 6-0 mini-run upped the lead to 12, but Maryville again came back, this time with the aid of the long ball. With six minutes left, the Saints knocked down back-to-back threes to cut it to a deuce, setting up the aforementioned action down the stretch.
Senior
Samantha Meissel scored a game-high 22 points to go with seven rebounds, three steals and a block. Turner finished with a career-best 16 points, while
Nickole Gonser set a new personal high with 10 rebounds.
The Greyhounds remain at home to face Missouri S&T Thursday, Jan. 13. Tip time is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
