INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Indianapolis Athletics Hall of Fame student-athlete and coach Bill Green passed away today in Indianapolis. All members of the UIndy family extend their condolences to Green's family.
Green was a basketball letterwinner from 1954-56 and golf letterwinner from 1953-56 for the Greyhounds before going on to become one of the most legendary high school basketball coaches in Indiana history.
Bill Green won his first state title with Indianapolis Washington High School in 1969, then moved to Marion, where established a basketball dynasty, winning state titles in 1975, 1976, 1985, 1986 and 1987. He was inducted into the UIndy Hall of Fame in 1987 and Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1988.
He came back to his alma mater to lead the Crimson and Grey for five seasons (1987-92) compiling 58 wins. Green coached three-time Great Lakes Valley Conference all-league guard Gary Paul, 1991 All-GLVC First Teamer Ron Rutland and 1989 Second Team All-GLVC honoree Kevin Owens.
According to the Marion Chronicle-Tribune, at Green's request, a private ceremony will be held for family members only within the week.
