2012 Silver Anniversary Team
NEW CASTLE, Ind. -- The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame announced that two former University of Indianapolis men's basketball student-athletes have been named to the 2012 Men's Silver Anniversary Team, based on outstanding accomplishments as a senior basketball player 25 years ago.
Kyle Persinger was a 1987 Indiana All-Star that averaged 9.8 points for the three-time state champion Marion Giants. He was a two-year all-conference selection, two years all-county, co-team MVP in 1987 and named Academic All-State. He was a four-year letterwinner for the Greyhounds and named team MVP in 1990. He was National Player of the Week in 1991 and academic all-conference. He still holds the school and conference record for 10 three-pointers made in one game vs. No. 7 Ashland on March 2, 1991, at Nicoson Hall to lead UIndy over the Eagles, 115-99. He is 14th in school history with 1,424 career points and fourth with 247 three-pointers and 396 assists. A graduate of IU School of Law, he is an attorney in Marion. He is married with four children.
Ron Rutland was 1987 UPI All-State when he averaged 19.4 points on a 22-6 Pike team that advanced to the semi-state. Teams his junior and senior seasons were a combined 41-12, two-time Marion County Tournament champions and winners of the Ben Davis sectional and Hinkle regional in 1987. As a junior, he was on the all-Marion County Tournament team and all-sectional team. As a senior, Rutland was all-county, all-conference, all-sectional, all-regional and all-semi-state as team co-captain and starting point guard. He was Marion County Player of the Year and Conference Player of the Year and a member of the first Pike team to win the conference, county, sectional and regional in the same season.
A four-year starter at UIndy, he is the all-time leader in assists (547), third in steals (182, he graduated as the school record holder) and ninth in points (1,734). He averaged 24.9 points per game his senior season when he was team MVP, All-GLVC First Team and first team all-district. He played seven seasons professionally in Europe and was two-time league MVP. An independent insurance agent, he is married with two children and lives in Indianapolis.
