Women's tennis adds two prep standouts

Head coach John Venter
INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Indianapolis women's tennis head coach John Venter has announced the addition of a pair of high school standouts. The Greyhounds will welcome Allie Smith (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) and Macey Speer (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) for the 2012-13 season. Smith is a three-star recruit ranked No. 7 in Indiana by TennisRecruiting.net, while Speer is a two-star recruit ranked No. 16 in the state.

"I am happy to announce the signings of Allie Smith Macey Speer," Venter said. "They are both very strong recruits whom I expect to be high contributors in our line-up right away."

Smith has been a varsity contributor for the Bull Dogs since her freshman year when she went 23-1 at No. 2 singles for a team that finished 20-3 and lost in the semistate championship match to Terre Haute South. She was Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association (IHSTeCA) Second Team All-State in 2009 and 2010 and moved up to First Team All-State in 2011 as a junior. She went 27-1 at No. 2 singles as a sophomore when Columbus North lost in the state finals to South Bend St. Joseph. The Republic Player of the Year in 2011 went 21-4 at No. 1 singles as the Bull Dogs were ranked eighth in the state and lost in the semistate to state runner-up Evansville Memorial.

Smith was also a four-year varsity player on the golf team for Columbus North that won three sectionals. She was named The Republic First Team All-Area as a senior after shooting the third-lowest score at the Bloomington North Sectional to advance to regional play, where she came one shot shy of qualifying for the state finals. As a senior, she led the Conference Indiana champions with a team low 41.7 average per nine holes.

Speer has been a varsity player since her freshman season for Roncalli when she went 18-4 at No. 1 doubles to set a school record on her way to all-county honors. Speer moved to No. 2 singles for the Rebels as a sophomore where she went 17-5. She won 17 more matches at No. 1 singles as a junior to set a school record and earn IHSTeCA Second Team All-State honors.

The 2011-12 UIndy women's tennis team resumes its season with five consecutive home matches beginning on Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. against Georgetown (Ky.) at the UIndy Tennis Center.
