INDIANAPOLIS- Hampered by a slow start, the UIndy women's team (13-10, 8-7 GLVC) dropped a slim 60-58 decision to Southern Indiana at Nicoson Hall Thursday night. The Greyhounds outscored the region's eighth-ranked team 40-28 in the final 20 minutes, but could not overcome a poor-shooting first half.
The Greyhounds shot a meager 15 percent from the floor in first 20 minutes, including just 1-for-14 from two-point range.
With 7:15 left in the first, the Hounds briefly stole the momentum when, on back-to-back possessions, freshman
Megan Birchmeier took a charge and sophomore
Heather Gonser hit a three. The spark was short lived, however, as the Screaming Eagles (15-8, 11-4) went on to lead 32-18 at the half.
Immediately out of the break, freshman
Rose Savela burned USI's 2-3 zone with a 3-pointer, giving the Hounds new life.
A
Katie Lyons lay-up and a Birchmeier triple followed to account for the half's first eight points. The surge more than halved the Eagles' halftime advantage and forced the USI bench to call a timeout.
The opponents traded punches down the stretch. With the margin back to double digits, the Greyhounds fought to cut it to five at the 10:45 mark, but the Eagles scored six answered to rebuild their cushion.
The Hounds came right back with a 10-2 run to trim it to three at the final media timeout. The rally was highlighted by Savela, who drained a three just as the shot clock expired.
Down five with just 90 seconds left, the Hounds forced two much-needed turnovers but were unable to convert on either. A couple of Greyhound threes in the final 10 seconds were not enough, as USI was able to escape with the big road win.
