INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy women's basketball team lost a defensive struggle Thursday night, falling 52-42 to a stingy Northern Kentucky club. Senior Night festivities were on hand, as the Greyhounds recognized their lone senior,
Katie Lyons.
The final marked the second time this season that NKU held the Greyhounds to less than 50 points, as the Norse (16-9, 10-7) came into the night ranked sixth in the nation in scoring defense.
A conventional 3-point play from Lyons capped a 5-0 UIndy run to start the game, but the Greyhounds made just one field goal in the final 18-and-a-half minutes of the half.
The Norse ran off nine unanswered points and remained in front for the balance of the period, leading by as much as seven. The Hounds struggled to produce offensively, shooting just 3-of-16 from the floor and committing 11 turnovers in the first 20 minutes. UIndy sank 10-of-11 free throws, however, and trailed by just six at the break.
Out of the stoppage, the Greyhounds again started the half with a 3-point play, and again a field goal drought followed. Freshman
Katy McIntosh earned the hoop and the harm to make it 25-20 Norse at the 18:37 mark before the Hounds endured an eight-minute stretch without a bucket.
Meanwhile, the visiting Norse built a 17-point advantage with 11 minutes to go. The Greyhounds pulled within nine on a McIntosh triple with 6:35 left and later cut it eight in the final minute, but UIndy would not quite get within striking distance.
McIntosh finished with a team-high 13 points to go with five rebounds and freshman Diana Jovanovic had another double-digit rebound game with 10 boards. Lyons finished with seven points and two blocks, while all three of
Heather Gonser's second-half steals led directly to UIndy points.
Having already clinched a spot in the upcoming GLVC Tournament, the Greyhounds await the results of the remaining Thursday games, as well as six contests this weekend to determine their seeding. The 12-team tourney begins with six games on campus sites Saturday, Feb. 26, and concludes with the quarterfinals, semis and finals, Mar. 4-6 in St. Louis, Mo.
Note: Along with Lyons, UIndy also recognized senior athletic trainer Sarah Hemmick before the game.
