INDIANAPOLIS --
The University of Indianapolis had three shots in the final 54 seconds, but were upset by No. 9 seed Lewis, 69-67, in front of 1,071 at Nicoson Hall in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Basketball Tournament.

The fourth-seeded Greyhounds (19-8) were led by First Team All-GLVC guard Darius Adams with 20 points and DeWann Squires added 16 points and career-high 11 rebounds against the Flyers (17-13). Wilbur O'Neal contributed 10 points, while Third Team All-GLVC guard Adrian Moss dished nine assists.

Lewis was led by Second Team All-GLVC guard Dennis Thomas, Jr., with 31 points and Chris McClellan chipped in 15 points.

UIndy shot 35.9 percent (23-64), but did hit 11 three-pointers and made 10-of-12 free throws, but Lewis made 18-of-25 free throws, including 16-of-19 in the second half. The Flyers also made 9-of-13 (.692) three-pointers to finish overall at 48.8 percent (21-43).

"They sat in a zone all night and we settled for 30 three-pointers," head coach Stan Gouard. "On the other end, they were driving to the bucket and we couldn't keep guys in front of us. Then we fouled too much and they got into a rhythm by making free throws."

The Greyhounds dominated on the glass, 40-28, with 17 offensive rebounds that led to a 23-4 edge in second-chance points.

"We did a good job of attacking the boards, but we didn't capitalize enough," Gouard said. "On the defensive side, we needed to turn more of those clean rebounds into fast break points and we didn't."

The Greyhounds led, 55-45, with 9:52 remaining after Adams hit a three-pointer assisted by Leland Brown, but then went cold. Lewis scored nine in a row over the next 2:19, while limiting UIndy to a pair of missed shots and two turnovers. UIndy stopped the run as Jarrett Hamilton canned a triple, 58-54, but Lewis went on an 8-2 run to take its first lead, 62-60, with 4:08 to go since it was 17-15.

The Flyers eventually pushed their lead to seven, 68-61, after a four-point play with 1:54 to go, but UIndy made a last stand. O'Neal converted a three-point play after an offensive rebound and then Moss and Adams hit 3-of-4 free throws to pull UIndy within one, 68-67, with 57 seconds to go.

The Hounds forced their third consecutive turnover to regain possession, but Moss' jumper was off the mark. UIndy retained possessoin with the offensive rebound and put the ball in Adams' hands. Adams drove the lane and dished to an open Squires in the corner, but his three-pointer was off the mark with 12 seconds left. After Lewis hit one free throw, Adams took the inbounds and went the length of the court, but his attempt to tie was blocked.

UIndy started the game with hot-shooting to jump to an eight-point lead, 15-7, after its fourth three-pointer in the first 5:18. Lewis responded with a 10-0 run to take its first lead, 17-15, with 11:56 left in the half. The Greyhounds quickly regained the lead after Paul Corsaro stole the rebound from Lewis and converted a three-point play and Squires hit another three-pointer to put UIndy up four, 21-17, with 10:18 on the clock.

The lead reached back to six, 26-20, after Brown scored inside, but it took Moss' driving lay-up with one second left to put UIndy up four, 30-26, at halftime.

Lewis advances to the second round of the GLVC Tournament at Moloney Arena in St. Louis, Mo., on March 4, while UIndy will sit and wait to see if they finish as one of the top eight teams in the Midwest Region and advance to the NCAA Tournament.
