UIndy earns 25-point win at Rockhurst

Box score

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-  The UIndy women's basketball team (13-9, 8-6 GLVC) held Rockhurst to just 14 points in the first half on the way to a 73-48 road win.  Freshman Megan Birchmeier scored a team-high 13 points.

The GLVC's only winless team in league play, the Hawks (4-18, 0-13) scored the first bucket of the game but didn't sniff the lead again.  With the score 11-8 Greyhounds, UIndy used a 17-3 run to take full control.  The rally started with back-to-back threes from freshman Rose Savela, while Rockhurst managed just a single field goal in one nine-minute stretch.

The score settled at 33-14 at the break.  UIndy held its host to a meager .222 field goal percentage in the first half, as the Hawk's point total marked the lowest allowed by the Hounds in any half this season.  Birchmeier led all players with 10 points.

The Hawks were much more productive offensively in the second half, but still had difficulty stopping their guests.  Indianapolis slowly increased the margin to 26 points at the 13:33 mark, and later to 30 on a free throw from Birchmeier with 2:15 to go.

Eleven Greyhounds got in the scoring column, led by Birchmeier's 13 points and Katy McIntosh's 11.  Nickole Gonser pulled down seven rebounds, Savela dished out five assists and Heather Gonser had four steals.

It's all divisional games from the Greyhounds from here on out.  Three of their final four regular season games are at home and a good showing down the stretch could earn the Hounds a home game in the first round of the upcoming conference tournament.  UIndy begins its stretch run versus East Division-leading Southern Indiana Thursday, Feb. 10.  Tip time from Nicoson Hall is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
