KISSIMMEE, Fla.- The UIndy softball team opened its annual trip to the Rebel Spring Games with a 3-2 loss to C.W. Post Monday afternoon, but rebounded with an 8-3 win over Wayne State later in the afternoon. The split pushes the Greyhounds to 10-5-1 on the season.
C.W. POST 3, UINDY 2
The Pioneers struck early in game one of the day, plating three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning.
UIndy answered with a pair in its half of the inning, with
Jamie Keltz starting things off with a single through the left side. She moved to second when
Jennifer DeMotte got on via an error by the C.W. Post secondbaseman.
A wild pitch advanced both runners, and a single through the right side from
Lauren Edwards scored Keltz. DeMotte would score a batter later on a fielder's choice by
Dakota Malayer.
C.W. Post loaded the bases in the second, but
Audrey Ernst was able to get out of the inning without any further scoring damage by the Pioneers.
UIndy thought it had tied the score with two outs in the fifth inning, as
Kelsey Rummel reached on a single to second base, stole second and thought she had scored on a single by
DeVyn Barker two batters later. The Pioneers appealed Rummel's touch of homeplate, however, and Rummel was called out.
Edwards took the loss, moving to 1-2 on the season. Edwards surrendered all three Pioneer runs before turning the game over to
Audrey Ernst, who held C.W. Post scoreless through six and two-thirds.
UINDY 8, WAYNE STATE 3
The Greyhounds bested Wayne State for the second time this season with an 8-3 victory in Monday's nightcap.
Malayer opened the UIndy scoring with a solo home run to center field to lead off the second inning. Two batters later, Ernst drew a walk, and moved to second on an infield single by
Krysta Bradford. Another infield single, from Rummel, moved Ernst to third. She came in to score on a walk issued to Barker to put UIndy up 2-0.
One more run found its way home for the Greyhounds in the third inning, with a lead-off walk to Edwards starting the frame. Edwards advanced to second on a walk to
Jessica Breeden, and was pinchran for by
Cori Eckerle. A fielding error by the Warrior secondbaseman moved Eckerle to third, and she scored on a ball to shallow right by Bradford.
UIndy plated one more in the fourth, with Barker sending a single to right center with one out. A double to left center a batter later from DeMotte brought Barker all the way around from first to score.
The Warriors made it close with three runs in their portion of the fourth, on a pair of hits and two walks.
The Greyhounds answered in the top of the fifth with an insurance run to run the score to 5-3. Ernst opened the inning with a single down the right field line, and was sacrificed over to second by Bradford. A wild pitch put Ernst at third, and she scored on an RBI groundout by Rummel.
A bases-loaded single to left by Keltz brought in another Greyhound run, and DeMotte followed two batters later with a two-run single to push the UIndy lead to 8-3.
DeMotte earned the win, improving to 7-3 on the season. She struck out three over her seven innings of work. The Greyhound sophomore also finished 3-of-5 at the plate with three RBIs in the contest. Ernst was 1-for-1 at the plate with three walks and three runs scored.
UIndy continues on in Rebel Spring Games play, facing off with Stonehill and Adelphi and 11:00 a.m. and 1 p.m. tomorrow.
