Baseball continues to roll with 14-9 win at UAM

MONTICELLO, Ark.-  Off to its best start in 12 years, the UIndy baseball team moved to 7-0 with a 14-9 win at Arkansas-Monticello Tuesday.

Both teams' starters had abbreviated outings, as JaVaun West and Brent Noble each lasted just 3 1/3 innings.  Three Greyhound fielding errors conspired against West, who gave up 10 hits in his second appearance this season.

The Boll Weevils (9-8) used a four-run fourth to take a slim 8-7 edge, but it didn't last, as the Greyhounds plated two in the top of the sixth to regain lead.  The frame was highlighted by a solo shot from catcher Brandon Stevens, his first as a Greyhound.

Leading by that same margin heading into the eighth, the Greyhounds sent a combined 15 hitters to the plate in the final two innings, scoring a game-changing six runs in the process.  Seniors Aryn Ross and Kaleb Cunningham helped put the game away, as they each had a two-run double in the eighth and ninth inning, respectively.

Senior Matt Widick (2-0) earned the win in relief.  The Normal, Ill., native spelled West in the fourth frame and promptly gave up back-to-back doubles.  He settled down from that point, however, retiring nine of the final 12 batters he faced.

Cunningham, the reigning Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week, entered the game leading the league in hitting.  He did little to change that fact, going 3-for-6 at the plate with four RBIs.  Leadoff man Ryan Wides reached base safely in five of his six plate appearances, swiping three bases and scoring all five times.

Matt Maringer (pictured) smacked his second career dinger with a three-run bomb in the second.

UIndy hopes to match the 8-0 start by its 1999 counterpart when it faces Arkansas Tech tomorrow at 1 PM.
