2010-11 All-Academic Teams
2010-11 Academic Team Top 20
KEARNEY, Neb.- The University of Indianapolis wrestling team was named the 2010-11 Academic National Champion by the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association. The Greyhounds also placed five student-athletes on the individual All-Academic teams.
In addition to the team honor,
Ethan Harris and
Matt Irwin earned a spot on the All-Academic first team. Harris posted a 3.44 GPA as an Elementary Education major. Irwin, a second-time honoree, posted a 3.29 in Elementary Education.
Brothers David and
George Lopez both earned second team All-Academic honors.
David Lopez compiled a GPA of 3.76 as a Chemistry major, while
George Lopez had a GPA of 3.38 in Nursing.
Shelby Mappes was an honorable mention All-Academic, posting a GPA of 3.39 in Nursing.
To earn the academic honor, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. The wrestler must be in at least his second full year at his school, be a varsity member on his team or a key reserve, demonstrate a degree of skill and have a minimum of two letters of recommendation (academic advisor and coach) submitted on his behalf.
The 2010-2010 Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team consists of 160 student-athletes from 37 universities and colleges. Thirty-eight members were named to the first team, 35 members to the second team, and 87 were named as honorable mention.
The Team GPA is calculated by averaging the cumulative grade point averages of ten wrestlers from each team of which eight of those wrestlers must have competed in their team's NCAA II National Qualifying Tournament. This is the first time in the 18 years the honor has been given that UIndy has won. The Greyhounds posted a team GPA of 3.419 to take top honors in the nation.
