Greyhounds sweep Maryville 8-3, 8-1

Jamie Keltz steals the 71st base of her career to become the program's career leader in steals
INDIANAPOLIS- The Greyhounds took a doubleheader sweep of Maryville, 8-3 and 8-1 in non-conference action at the Indiana Central Little League Wednesday. Big fifth inning outputs in both games helped UIndy to the wins, which improve its record to 20-7-1.

NO. 13 UINDY 8 - MARYVILLE 3

The Greyhounds put three runs up in the bottom half of the first to stake themselves to an early lead in the day's first contest. Jamie Keltz opened the inning with a walk, and moved to third on a pair of steals. She came home on a single up the middle by Jennifer DeMotte, who stole second and then took third on a single to left by Cori Eckerle.

Eckerle stole second, drawing a throw that went into centerfield. The overthrow moved Eckerle to third and allowed DeMotte to score. Eckerle would score a batter later when a ball sent sharply to the Saints' thirdbaseman by Shelby Owens was misplayed.

Maryville answered with a pair of runs on a homerun over the right-center fence by Amanda Buffa to run the score to 3-2 in favor of the Greyhounds.

UIndy opened up the scoring with five runs on four hits in the fifth. Keltz started things off with a one-out homerun to right center. The rest of the inning's runs came with two outs, starting with a single down the rightfield line from DeMotte.

An error by the Maryville thirdbasman put Dakota Malayer on, and a wild pitch put runners on second and third. Eckerle walked, loading the bases for Owens. The Greyhound designated player answered with a single through the left side to score DeMotte.

DeVyn Barker cleared the bases a batter later with a double to right center, bringing the score to 8-2 UIndy.

Maryville put one run on the board with one out in the top of the seventh, but Greyhound relief pitcher Meagan Gutierrez was able to get two quick outs to end the ballgame with the Greyhounds winning 8-3.

Keltz and DeMotte each had a pair of hits, while DeMotte also earned the win in the circle. The Greyhound sophomore improved to 11-4 with the victory, in which she struck out seven.

NO. 13 UINDY 8 - MARYVILLE 1

The Saints put up the first run in game two, plating one run in the top of the second inning. A Maryville runner that reached on a dropped ball in the Greyhound outfield scored on an illegal pitch to put the Saints ahead 1-0 early.

UIndy finally got the offense going in the fifth inning, with a Keltz walk starting the frame. Keltz stole second and came home on a single up the middle by Che' Hanebrink.

DeMotte walked, and a double from Malayer a batter later brough home Hanebrink, bringing Eckerle up with runners on second and third. The UIndy catcher sent a ball straight over the centerfield fence to plate three. Two batters later, Krysta Bradford also homered, sending a solo shot over the left center fence for her first collegiate home run. The inning closed with the Greyhounds ahead 6-1.

UIndy picked up another pair of runs in the sixth, with Keltz tripling to right-center to lead off the inning. She scored on a groundout to short by Hanebrink a batter later. DeMotte singled up the middle, and two batters later Eckerle doubled to left center.

Owens came on to hit and delivered an RBI single down the leftfield line, plating DeMotte to run the score to 8-1 Greyhounds.

Lauren Edwards took the complete game win in game two, improving to 4-2 on the season. Eckerle finished game two 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs.

UIndy hosts Southern Indiana and Missouri-St.Louis in a pair of home GLVC doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday. First pitch is slated for noon both days.

NOTES: Keltz had five stolen bases on the day, with the third giving her the UIndy career record for steals...Keltz's homerun in the fifth inning of game one was the 36th of her UIndy career, putting her in a tie for the career lead.
