Hounds ride Rupert’s arm to 6-2 win

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- The UIndy baseball team moved to 3-0 on the early season with a 6-2 win versus Wayne State (Neb.) Monday afternoon.  Starting pitcher Cory Rupert picked up the win in his first appearance of the season.

Rupert put in 6.2 innings of work, giving up just two hits and one run while striking out eight.  The two-time all-conference performer will enter his next start three Ks shy of becoming just the seventh Greyhound ever to amass 200 career strikeouts.

UIndy got on the board right out of the gate, as leadoff man Ryan Wides used an error by the Wildcat right fielder to plate himself.  WSC junior Mike Bisenius couldn't catch up with Wides' fly ball and then sailed the throw, allowing the speedy center fielder to come all the way around to score.

The Greyhounds never trailed on the day, adding two more runs in the third inning, and one each in the fourth, seventh and ninth.

Matt Maringer made it three straight games with two hits, as the junior outfielder went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Kaleb Cunningham and Adam Rusche also had a pair of base hits, while third baseman Spenser Smith drove in three.

Reliever Chris Saroff finished the game by earning the four-out save.

The contest was played on the campus of the University of Southern Indiana as part of the fourth-annual Dunn Hospitality Tournament.

Up next for the Greyhounds is a three-game series versus Hillsdale at Greyhound Park.  Hillsdale will be looking for some revenge as UIndy took a pair of games from the Chargers just last weekend.  The two are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon, following by a single game at 11 AM Sunday.
