INDIANAPOLIS- The No. 13 Greyhounds split with Northern Kentucky in GLVC action Sunday at the Indiana Central Little League, taking game one 2-0 in 10 innings behind a walk-off homerun before falling 4-0 to the Norse in game two.
NO. 13 UINDY 2 - NORTHERN KENTUCKY 0 (9 INN.)
UIndy (27-10-1, 10-6 GLVC) and the visiting Norse (23-12, 13-4 GLVC) fought through eight and a half innings of scoreless softball before a walk-off homerun off the bat of the Greyhound's
Jessica Breeden broke the scoring stalemate.
After
Cori Eckerle singled to shortstop and took second on a throwing error by the Norse fielder, Breeden came to the plate and sent her second homer of the year over the right center fence to give the Greyhounds the extra-inning win, walk-off style.
Jennifer DeMotte earned the win in the circle, striking out a career-high 16 en route to the victory. Her K total is the best put up by a Greyhound since
Megan Russell fanned 16 Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers Apr. 23, 2010 in a 10-inning game, and ranks in the top five single-game totals ever recorded by a Greyhound.
Jamie Keltz and Breeden both finished the ballgame with a pair of hits apiece.
NO. 13 UINDY - NORTHERN KENTUCKY
Game two started much like the opener, with neither team scoring through five complete innings. NKU broke the scoreless tie with a single run in the top of the sixth to take a 1-0 lead.
The Norse plated three more runs on three hits in the top of the seventh to take the 4-0 win.
Lauren Edwards (6-3) was tabbed with the loss, after 4.2 innings of work. Edwards struck out five and walked none before giving way to DeMotte and
Audrey Ernst.
Che' Hanebrink and
Kelsey Rummel each had a pair of hits in the second game.
UIndy heads to GLVC-leading Lewis for a pair next Friday. The Greyhounds will then host Bellarmine Saturday for a make-up of last weekend's doubleheader that was rained out.
