Greyhound softball sweeps GLVC-leading UMSL

INDIANAPOLIS- The No. 13 Greyhound softball team handed Missouri-St. Louis its first two GLVC losses of the season Sunday, besting the visiting Tritons 11-3 and 11-2 at the Indiana Central Little League. The wins improve UIndy's record to 23-8-1 on the year, 7-5 in conference play.

NO. 13 UINDY 11 - UMSL 3 (5 INN.)

After the Tritons put up a single run on a solo homerun in the top of the second, UIndy answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to claim a 3-1 lead.

The Greyhounds pushed across their three-spot on a pair of hits along with a pair of UMSL errors. Dakota Malayer opened the inning with a walk, and moved to third on a double to right by Cori Eckerle. A walk to DeVyn Barker loaded the bases.

All three baserunners came in to score on a ball sent to second base by Krysta Bradford. The Triton fielder mis-played the ball, and then over-threw her catcher to allow all three Greyhound runs across.

UIndy added five more runs in the bottom of the third, on three hits and three more Triton errors. Jamie Keltz led off with a single to right center, and advanced to second on a fielding error in centerfield. She stole third, and came home on a falied pick-off attempt.

Che' Hanebrink walked, and stole second. She was followed by a walking DeMotte, and Malayer reaching on a fielding error at first base. The error on Malayer's ball scored Hanebrink.

DeMotte scored on an RBI-single to short by Jessica Breeden, and scored along with Malayer on a single to centerfield by Kelsey Rummel.

UMSL took its second run on a solo homerun by JaCee Ellis to deep centerfield, and plated a third run in the fifth on a pair of hits.

The Greyhounds put up three runs in the bottom of the third to take the 11-3 win. Eckerle led off with a walk, and moved to third on a double to the right corner by Breeden. Both scored on a passed ball and an error by the Triton pitcher.

The game-ending run scored in the form of Barker, who walked, stole second and came home on a double to centerfield by Rummel.

DeMotte earned the win, striking out seven in her five innings of work. Rummel finished the game three-for-three at the plate with three RBIs.

NO. 13 UINDY 11 - UMSL 2 (5 INN.)
The Greyhounds struck first in game two, plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning on one hit and one UMSL error. Hanebrink walked, stole second and came home on a single to center by Malayer. DeMotte, who got on via a fielder's choice, scored along with Malayer on an overthrow of firstbase by the Triton thirdbaseman.

UIndy added a pair in the second, with Rummel reaching on a single up the middle. She stole second and scored on DeMotte's first homerun of the season. The DeMotte homer ran the score to 5-0 in favor of the Greyhounds.

The Tritons got two back in the top of the third, with a double to centerfield providing the pair of runs.

The Greyhounds put up six runs in the bottom of the fourth to push the score to 11-2. A single down the leftfield line by Malayer scored the first two runs, and the third of the frame came in on a single to center by Eckerle. A walk issued to Bradford with the bases loaded scored the fourth UIndy run of the inning.

Rummel again brought in the run-rule getting scores, plating the final two Greyhound runs on a double down the leftfield line to close out a six-for-six day at the plate. Rummel had five RBIs on the day and scored three runs as well.

Lauren Edwards (5-2) earned the win, striking out four en route to the victory.

The Greyhounds continue on in GLVC play next weekend, heading to Bellarmine and Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday and Sunday for league doubleheaders.
