Hounds take two in GLVC East showdown

UIndy's third baseman/closer Chris Saroff

INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy baseball team (18-6, 9-5 GLVC) swept division-leading Saint Joseph's Wednesday, handing the visiting Pumas losses of 10-1 and 8-6.

SJC (18-9-1, 11-3), ranked 27th in this week's Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Poll, came into play topping the eight-team GLVC East Division.  Prior to Wednesday, the Pumas had not lost in two-and-a-half weeks, mixing in one tie with 12 wins since Mar. 19.

The Greyhounds had base runners in every inning in the game-one rout, racking up 13 hits and 10 runs in all.

Though SJC came in leading the league in both batting average and runs scored, starting pitcher JaVaun West had his best outing as a Greyhound, tossing 7 1/3 innings while allowing just four hits and one run and striking out six.

With the score tied at 0-0 in the top of the second, the Pumas had a man at second with two outs when Joe Pudlo smacked the ball to the right side.  Though Pudlo reached on the infield single, UIndy second baseman Scott Lawley made a great stop moving to his left to keep the lead runner at third.  West induced a grounder to short from the next hitter to escape with no damage.

The Greyhound went on to score six runs in the next three innings, with the biggest blow coming on a two-out, two-run single from senior Aryn Ross in the third.

After a leadoff walk, a single and a sacrifice fly gave the Pumas their lone run of the game in the sixth inning, the Hounds answered with two runs in both the seventh and eighth.  Junior Chris Saroff recorded an RBI double in each frame.

Five Greyhounds finished with at least two hits, including DH Scott Mourey, who went 3-for-3 at the plate.

GAME TWO

The SJC bats woke up a bit in the second game, as the visitors managed a 5-2 lead after two-and-a-half innings.  A two-run homer from leftfielder Angelo Burrage highlighted the Pumas' early production.

However, five UIndy relievers combined to allow a single run over the final five innings to setup a potential comeback.

The Greyhound offense responded with two tallies in the third and four in the sixth to erase the Puma advantage.

Down 6-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth, UIndy began the inning with four straight hits, including doubles from catcher Brandon Stevens and pinch hitter Alex Kiel.  The game-winning RBI came on a single from Andrew Armour, who later scored an insurance run on Ross' single up the middle.

Normally a weekend starter, senior Cory Rupert (4-2) came on in relief to toss a perfect sixth and earn the win.  Saroff climbed the hill in the seventh innning and garnered his seventh save of the year.

Armour finished the game with two hits, two runs and two RBIs, including a solo homerun in the bottom of the first.

UIndy remains in town to host another division foe this weekend, as Wisconsin-Parkside comes to Greyhound Park for a four-game series.  The opponents will play a doubleheader on both Saturday and Sunday -- both starting at noon (weather permitting).
