INDIANAPOLIS -- The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its NCAA Division II awards and University of Indianapolis men's and women's tennis earned four awards. On the men's side, junior
Pete Wilson earned the Midwest Region Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award, while Jarrod Epkey was named Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year. For the women, senior
Ceciley Starkey was the Midwest Region Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship winner and Harry Schwartz was Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
Epkey, the 2009-10 Midwest Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year, added the men's award to his resume this season. The men compiled nine wins and Epkey helped mentor freshman
Trevor Cox to finish 14-9 in singles and 12-9 in doubles in his first season of competition.
"Jarrod was key in running operations for our men's team this year," head coach John Venter said. "He's very knowledgeable and his help has been incredible. It's just a matter of time until the right opportunity comes along and he becomes a head coach."
Wilson, a transfer from SIU-Edwardsville, had one of the highlights of the season for UIndy when he teamed with
Christian Nikou to beat the No. 1 doubles team in the Midwest from Lewis. As a doubles specialist for the Greyhounds, Wilson played in a match-high 23 doubles matches with four different partners at all three positions.
"Pete had a great attitude all year and provided a positive contribution no matter who he was playing with or where he was playing in the line-up," Venter said.
Schwartz has been involved in the Indianapolis tennis scene was 30 years and is valuable contributor to the UIndy women's tennis program. A former head coach at Roncalli High School and currently the head coach at Southport High School, he helped the women rank No. 10 in the Midwest region throughout the season. The Greyhounds qualified for the GLVC Tournament, while also compiling an impressive 5-1 road record.
"Harry has been instrumental in helping the program in his ability to see the little things," Venter said. "He's been around the game for so long and provides so much knowledge to our players. He's also so dedicated, that he'll often drive himself to our road matches to be there to coach the girls."
Starkey wraps up her four-year career with recognition from the ITA. A recent recipient of the UIndy Richard Schrier Postgraduate Scholarship, she went 5-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference doubles with fellow senior
Kelsey Hartman. She concluded her career 41-24 in doubles and 10-4 in singles. A UIndy Presidential Scholar, she is a member of the Sigma Zeta, Phi Alpha Epsilon and Alpha Chi honor societies and has already been accepted to med school at Indiana University.
"She is highly involved in multiple campus activities and has dedicated a lot of time to serving others and I think that is what stood out to the awards committee," Venter said.
