No. 20 UIndy softball wins 1-0 in first round of NCAA Regional play

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich.- No. 20 UIndy defeated Ashland 1-0 behind an RBI double from Cori Eckerle in the bottom of the fourth inning in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional #2.

The Eagles (32-17) left two runners on in the top of the second inning, but a flyout to left and a strike out on a 3-2 count from Jennifer DeMotte got the Greyhounds (35-12-1) out of the early jam.



UIndy's first chance came in the bottom of the third, with Krysta Bradford taking her base after being hit by a pitch with one out. Kelsey Rummel followed with the Greyhounds' first hit of the ballgame, but both were stranded on base.

The Greyhounds struck first, plating one run in the bottom of the fourth. Dakota Malayer, who reached on a fielder's choice, came around to score on a double to right center by Cori Eckerle to give UIndy the 1-0 lead.

DeMotte (21-5) earned the win, striking out five en route to her eighth shutout of the year. Rummel was 2-for-2 at the plate in the win.

UIndy plays host No. 3-seed Saginaw Valley State, who defeated Northern Kentucky to advance on in the winner's bracket. First pitch from the SVSU Athletic Complex is slated for 11:00 a.m.
