Greyhounds earn sweep in season finale

INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy baseball team wrapped up its 2011 season with a pair of wins over Kentucky Wesleyan Monday at Greyhound Park.  After defeating the visiting Panthers 6-4 and 11-5, the Greyhounds finished with an overall record of 29-19, including an even 18-18 conference mark.

GAME ONE | Box score
Aided by a pair of solo homers from DH Davey Murphy, the Panthers (16-23, 10-18 GLVC) took a 4-2 lead after three and a half, but the Hounds came back with a four spot in the bottom of the fourth  to take the lead for good.

After starter Clint Seefeldt had a shaky three innings, junior JaVaun West climbed the hill to start the fourth.  West (4-0) earned the win by holding the Panthers scoreless for the remaining four frames.  He struck out the final two hitters he faced to finish the season without a loss.

Senior Aryn Ross upped his school record for doubles in the first inning with his 50th career two-bagger.  The extra-base hit drove in two of his four RBIs on the day. Meanwhile, leadoff-man Matt Maringer had two hits, two runs and a stolen base.

GAME TWO | Box score
Before the Greyhounds managed to break it open with four runs in both the sixth and eighth innings, the game remained tight.  The big hit came in the sixth when Nate Koontz broke a 4-4 tie with a two-run double.  Koontz fell behind 0-2 but worked the count full before driving the ball into the leftfield corner.

Leading 7-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Greyhounds piled on with four more tallies in their final at bat, all coming via the long ball.  Koontz began the frame with a solo shot to left, and four batters later, catcher Kyler Mason also cleared the fence with a three-run bomb.  Koontz's blast was his fourth of the season, giving him sole possession of the team lead.

Each donning an ample amount of Eyeblack, senior relievers Andy Betts and Matt Widick combined to pitch scoreless baseball for the final 3 2/3 innings of the day, with Betts (pictured) picking up the win.

Leftfielder Alex Kiel went 4-for-4 with a sac fly, shortstop Kaleb Cunningham had two hits and scored twice, while designated hitters Scott Mourey and Koontz combined for four hits and four driven in.

Monday's action marked the final collegiate games for Betts, Widick, Ross, Cunningham, Kiel and Cory Rupert.  Ross finished his career as the school's all-time leader in doubles and ranks third in at bats and fourth in both hits and runs scored.  Rupert, who didn't play Monday but started yesterday's first game, finished third all-time in innings pitched, third in wins and third in strikeouts.
