Donahue, Walpole highlight departmental award winners

INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy athletic department announced its 2010-11 year-end award winners today, with women's swimmer Maura Donahue and wrestler Nick Walpole winning their respective gender's Dr. Robert M. Brooker Most Valuable Athlete Award.

Each varsity sport's head coach selected a Most Valuable Player from their respective roster.  Those winners are then eligible for selection as the UIndy Male and Female Athletes of the Year, chosen by the athletics department administration.

Female-winner Maura Donahue notched a team-high seven All-America nods at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving National Championships in March.  Donahue was the D-II runner-up in the 200m (1:48.25), 500m (4:51.90) and 1,000m free (9:59.61), and fourth in the 100m free (50.05).  She also helped the team place third in the 800m free relay (7:28.37), fourth in the 400m free relay (3:25.21) and 7th in the 200 free relay (1:34.08).  Not only was she an All-American in those seven events, but she also set school records in all seven as well.

Meanwhile, Nick Walpole earned the school's male MVP after becoming the wrestling program's first-ever national champion.  He earned a buzzer-beating takedown versus Nebraska-Kearney's T.J. Hepburn to take a 4-2 win in the 149-pound final last March.  Walpole, who was also the 157-pound Little State champ, finished the season with a stellar 42-3 record.  His 42 wins and 17 pins were both good for second in the UIndy single-season annals.
