INDIANAPOLIS -- Sophomore
Taylor Eckert won the singles consolation championship of the USTA/ITA Division II Women's Midwest Regional Championships hosted by the University of Indianapolis from Friday through Sunday at Whiteland High School, Center Grove High School and the UIndy Tennis Center.
Overall, the Greyhounds finished with 15 wins in singles and doubles over the course of the weekend in the final individual tournament of the season.
Eckert defeated Tanya Joseph of Wayne State 6-3, 6-0 and Christine Schatz of Rockhurst 6-3, 6-1 before having to face her teammate, freshman
Kelsey Matthews. Eckert survived 6-3, 3-6, (10-8) before winning by default in the semifinals and finals against Alexandra Schelble and Leigh Anne Fourie of Rockhurst.
Before meeting Eckert, Matthews won 6-2, 6-3 against Ellena Stumpf of Southern Indiana and 6-1, 7-5 over Lindsey White of USI.
Rachel Barger won two matches in the consolation draw as well against Morgan Coquerille of Southern Indiana (6-4, 6-4) and Kelly Hollingsworth of Bellarmine (6-2, 7-6(4)).
In the main draw, senior
Alena Perez-Majul won her first round match 6-0, 7-5 against Kira Eck of Michigan Tech and
Meghan Teunis won 6-2, 6-1 against Anita Girizd of Ohio Dominican. Perez-Majul teamed with
Maggie Ashby to earn UIndy's lone doubles main draw win 8-1 against Ploy Suthijindawong and Chelsea Uganski of Michigan Tech.
The doubles championship was claimed by Zsofi Kranczicki and Zsofi Lanstiak of Lewis with an 8-2 victory over Sofia Espana-Perez and Aline Mariano of Ohio Dominican. The Flyer teammates also reached the singles championship and will play each other on Tuesday at Lewis to determine the championship.
The singles and doubles champion(s) from this regional earned an automatic berth to the 2011 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships, which is scheduled for
October 13-16, 2011 hosted by the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. As in the past, the winners of the Small College Super Bowl will receive wildcards into the Division I USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships (
November 3-6, 2011 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, NY).
