GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- The University of Indianapolis women's tennis team opened the 2011-12 season by winning three flight championships at the DePauw Fall Invitational. Overall, the Greyhounds finished the weekend 13-6 in singles and 5-3 in doubles.
Freshman
Kelsey Matthews won the No. 5 singles flight, while sophomore
Claire Liles claimed the No. 6 singles flight championship. On the doubles side, the tandem of sophomore
Taylor Eckert and senior
Meghan Teunis won at the third position.
Matthews began her collegiate career by beating Mary Arnold of DePauw 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals, followed by a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Abby Day of Bellarmine. She met Aileen Hoffmann from the host school and took the victory 6-1, 6-0.
Liles started her tournament run with a 6-1, 6-0 win in the quarters over Katie Morrison of IU-Southeast and won 6-0, 6-1, in the semis against Sophie Hoffman. The finals saw Liles drop just one game for the third straight match to defeat Jordan Kerns of West Virginia State 6-1, 6-0.
Eckert and Teunis opened their tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Kathleen Kay and Sophie Hoffman and then dropped Cady McNear and Elizabeth Crush of Bellarmine 6-1, 6-4. The Greyhounds' duo won the finals with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over another team from DePauw, Aileen Hoffmann and Mary Arnold.
The Greyhounds made another singles final with Eckert defeating Keyly Knechtel of Bellarmine (6-2, 6-4) and Caitlin Ludlow of DePauw (6-3, 6-0) at No. 4 singles. She dropped a tight decision in the finals (6-3, 6-4) to Kaitlin Pickrel of DePauw.
UIndy continues its fall campaign by heading north to play in the Butler Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
