UIndy tabbed second in GLVC East Division in preseason poll

INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy softball team has been tabbed to finish second in the GLVC East Division, according to the 2012 GLVC Preseason Coaches Poll, released by the league Wednesday afternoon.

The Greyhounds amassed 101 total points, including two first-place votes, to fall in second behind defending GLVC champion Lewis' 116 points in the East Division. This season will mark the first of divisional play in the 16-team league.

Missouri-St. Louis, last year's regular-season champion, was chosen by the league coaches to take the West Division crown. The Tritons garnered 12 first-place votes in the West for 115 total points.

UIndy is coming off of a 36-14-1, 16-6 GLVC season a year ago, and returns a pair of All-Americans in Jennifer DeMotte and Kelsey Rummel. The Greyhounds open their 2012 slate at the Charger Chillout Feb. 17, with contests against West Alabama and Rollins.

The 2012 GLVC softball season will feature 16 teams for the first time as William Jewell enters its first year in the league, although the Cardinals will not be eligible for the conference tournament. In addition, this is the first year the softball teams will play a divisional schedule, with all 16 teams playing each other in a doubleheader and each divisional opponent in a pair of doubleheaders.

The top three teams from the East Division, the top two teams from the West Division and three wild card teams will earn a berth to the 2012 GLVC Softball Tournament April 27-29 at EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Ill.

The complete 2012 GLVC Softball Coaches Preseason Poll follows. Coaches are prohibited from voting for their own team in the poll.
